420 Treasure Hunt Turns into Global Cannabis Celebration – The History of
Location: San Rafael, California; Year:1971 - History of 420
San Rafael, California 1971

Back in 1971, in San Rafael, California, a group of high school friends, called the Waldos, had a fun plan. They wanted to find a hidden cannabis crop using a map they found. They decided to meet at a statue at their school at 4:20 pm to start their search. They tried many times but never found the crop. Over time, “4:20” (#0420) became their secret word for socially enjoying cannabis.

The story of the Waldos spread, especially after one of them started working with the famous band Grateful Dead. A magazine called High Times told everyone about the Waldos’ story. Even though some people said they started “4:20” before the Waldos, the Waldos are the ones most people remember.

Years later, “420” became more than just a time to enjoy cannabis; it turned into a special day for people to come together and ask for changes in the laws about cannabis. Every year on April 20th, people who want to change these laws have events and speak up. This all started with a simple adventure of five friends and grew into something big that lots of people care about. Did you know this is how it all started? In the comments below, tell us how did you learn about this annual cannabis celebration.
